Brass Ankle azures tells the story of undivided summer in the life of Nellie Kincaid.
Brass Ankle azures tells the story of undivided summer in the life of Nellie Kincaid, a 15-year-old girl trying to find her way in the world. Her parents have just split up and Nellie and her father take a road trip to the family's vacation hearth in Minnesota. Rachel M. Harpers first novel is published through Touchstone.
Like Nellie's, your father is a black author of poems and your mother is a white woman from Minnesota. for what cause much of Brass Ankle glums is autobiographical?
In many ways it is autobiographical, yet not because of Nellie. Nellie is single aspect, sure. But so many of the characters, with equal reason many of the dynamics, are things that I've struggl with. each character is me.
united of the novel's themes is the spaces in between: black and white, childhood and adulthood, compassion and anger. Is that individual of the dynamics that you've struggl with?
I tried to mix a fate of worlds in the part to come out of the coachman's seat as multifaceted. Characters that affect me are multifaceted. They are the commons who can be so amazing and heroic in about ways and then just very large failures in others. [I don't like] this whole separation of breaking down who you describe and what team you play for.
You are also a lesbian, allowing sexuality plays only a minor part in the events of the novel.
Several be fond of stories unfold throughout the novel, still none are explicitly gay. A central character does examine her sexual identity, on the contrary it is not the central "issue" in her life. However, I do think I have, and write with, a "gay sensibility," which is about letting make progress of masks and honestly looking at yourself and others. There is a search for balance. There is confidence All of this is what my novel is about.
